Navigating Women's Health, Hormones and Metabolic Adaptation
Podcast

Today I sat down with Dr.Ashley Dwyer, a licensed Pharmacist, Certified Health Coach, and founder of TeamBDN Coaching, where she helps women restore metabolism and hormones at the root. After experiencing her own dysfunction and years of band-aid solutions, she left traditional medicine to create a foundations-first method for sustainable fat loss and optimal health. She is on a mission to help women fix their foundations and take back their health.

Ashley spent years behind a pharmacy counter handing out what she calls band-aids before her own hormone issues pushed her out of the profession entirely. She now runs an online women's health practice built around PMOS, thyroid dysfunction, and perimenopause, and she's built the business model to match the biology: six- and twelve-month programs only, no check-in calls, a roster capped at forty. This conversation moves between the clinical and the operational because, for her, they're the same thing. If you're going to coach root causes, your business can't be built on band-aids either.

KEY QUOTE

"It's a poor business model, some people would say, to have your clients fire you because you help them too well. But so be it." - Dr. Ashley Dwyer

FIVE CORE THEMES

1. Trading stability for risk, slowly. Ashley ran pharmacy and coaching side by side for two years before she could walk away. Pharmacy was a hard paycheck to leave, and drugs sold themselves, so she had no marketing or sales skills to fall back on. Her honest assessment is that hiring a business coach out of the gate would have cut that timeline significantly.

2. Two populations, two problems. The overachiever who under-eats and over-trains, and the woman who's sedentary and in a chronic surplus. Both are metabolically unhealthy. Both need opposite interventions. The overachiever is harder to coach because the resistance is mental rather than behavioural.

3. Root cause over band-aid. The reclassification of PCOS to PMOS moves it from a reproductive problem to a metabolic and endocrine one. Ashley walks through the HPA, HPT, and HPG axes to explain why sex hormones get deprioritized when the body doesn't feel safe, and why the upstream stressor has to be addressed before anything downstream resolves.

4. Subtraction before addition.Telling an already overstretched woman to add meditation doesn't work. Her approach is removing energy drains first: unclosed loops, social media, avoided tasks, to create capacity before asking for anything new. The same logic drives her onboarding: bite-sized pieces, not the full protocol on day one.

5. Autonomy is the product. She deliberately lets some client messages sit so they can make their own decisions. She dropped check-in calls entirely and communicates via text, voice memo, and Loom. She set office hours and braced for complaints that never came.

MAIN TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

Alignment between what you preach and how you operate is the whole game. If your coaching philosophy is stress reduction and root cause resolution, but your delivery model buries clients in protocols, locks them into calls they can't reschedule, or trains them to need you, you've built a business that contradicts the thing you're selling. Ashley's roster cap, program lengths, communication structure, and intake process all exist because the physiology demanded them, not because a business coach told her they'd scale.
