Welcome back, Kandace Hudspeth, to the podcast for a second time. She is CMO at OPEX + CoachRx, with 20+ years in marketing, brand and growth strategy, and product development. She helps fitness coaches, personal trainers, and fitness brands build businesses with confidence, clarity and consistency.
If you haven’t heard her, episode #184 is still the one I recommend most to young coaches trying to build a brand.
This time we go deeper. We talk about why the fitness market isn’t saturated but mature, why conviction will always beat polish, and how a relationship coach with 40K followers sold Kandace a paid consult without ever pitching her. She breaks down her Four Ps framework, why “want to” content beats “how to” content, and what changes when you build toward a waitlist instead of chasing viral growth. If you’ve ever frozen up in front of the camera, this one’s for you.
Key Quote
“You can practice reading a script, and you can fake confidence to an extent. But you can’t fake belief and conviction.” – Kandace Hudspeth
5 Core Themes
Conviction can’t be faked. Kandace argues that conviction creates the emotional response that drives connection. Over-relying on AI, reading scripts, and forcing yourself into someone else’s content templates all strip it away. Original thought comes from doing the self-work and building space in your week to think.
The Four Ps. Person, Problem, Promise, and You and Your Process. Know your person obsessively, understand their urgent problem from every angle, be clear on the outcome you can credibly deliver, and articulate the unique mechanism that gets them there. That becomes your strategy on a page.
Want-to content over how-to content. Information is everywhere, so it’s not what we’re selling. Most coaches only create content for people already shopping for a coach, which is the smallest and most crowded part of the market. Kandace pushes coaches to go earlier in the stages of change and connect with people who aren’t even problem aware yet.
Make the first move. Expertise creates an intimidation layer, so the people quietly watching your stories rarely reach out. Kandace’s own experience booking a paid consult after a series of voice messages, and her case for the six by six (six real conversations, six days a week), show that personalized, service-first outreach beats automation.
Alignment is the strategy. Your quirks are your differentiators, scrappy beats overly polished, and you don’t have to be the finished product to embody the promise. When your life and your work are aligned, showing up as yourself creates no friction, and building toward capacity and a waitlist gives you room to deepen that work.
Main Take-Home Message
Marketing in a mature market isn’t about better templates or more polished content. It’s about knowing who you are, knowing your person and their problem better than anyone, and communicating what you genuinely believe with conviction. Kandace’s message is that when you lead with service and show up aligned, marketing does the heavy lifting so sales doesn’t have to.
