Dr. Matthew Hill - Be Impossible

Today I spoke with Dr.Matthew Hill, who faced the impossible before he understood what the word fully meant. Diagnosed with cancer as a child, he lost his leg and endured nine months of chemotherapy that nearly took his Life. What came after was its own battle — depression and alcoholism pulled him into a darkness he couldn't find the edges of. He was lost. Without purpose. Without direction.

The return began on the road and the platform. Through endurance racing and powerlifting, Matt found what it means to build an Individual who can create the outcomes you dream of. He has completed multiple Half Marathons, raised over $40,000 for children battling cancer, and squatted and deadlifted over 500 pounds on a prosthetic leg in powerlifting competition. Every rep, every mile, every dollar raised is living proof of the message he now carries into the world.

In 2023, Matthew founded Impossible Performance — not originally as a business, but as a direct transmission of everything his journey taught him. Because if he could build his body, his mind, his spirit, and his emotional foundation from the ruins of what cancer left behind, he knows with absolute certainty it can be done for anyone willing to do the work. "When faced with The Impossible, Be Impossible, and you will Do The Impossible."

This conversation picks up where most versions of Matthew's story stop. He's facing cancer again, this time caused by the chemotherapy that saved him the first time, and he walks through why the second diagnosis hasn't produced the numbness the first one did.

We get into emotional control as a trainable skill rather than a personality trait, why optimizing for the wrong outcome can leave you hollow even when you win, and what he needed from a coach that most coaches never think to offer.

He also opens the books on the business side: why cold outreach produced almost no sales, why he now runs on two deep connections a day, and what he's actually solving for. Near the end, he describes what's happening in his head under a loaded bar that's worth the listen on its own.

KEY QUOTE

"Cancer is about the most societally acceptable excuse you could possibly have. It doesn't have to be one." — Dr. Matthew Hill

FIVE CORE THEMES

1. Build the individual, not the outcome
Matthew's slogan is "be impossible," not "do the impossible." The 500-pound squat was the mechanism, not the point. The man built during that prep is the one now facing a second cancer diagnosis and a business build. Outcomes get taken from you. The individual stays.

2. Optimizing for the wrong thing will still break you
During his first cancer battle, his only goal was to survive. It worked, and then cancer was gone, and so was his identity, which dropped him into one of the darkest periods of his life. He built a powerful individual optimized for a target that disappeared.

3. Feel emotions fully, but hold the nozzle
His analogy: an old garden hose can spray wide and coat everything, or dial in to a focused stream with real pressure behind it. Same water. The difference between an emotion controlling you and you controlling it isn't intensity, it's direction.

4. Coaching that stops at inputs and outputs leaves performance on the table
What made his coaching relationship work wasn't the programming. It was a coach invested in who he was as a father, a business owner, and a human, then building the physical around that.

5. Two connections a day beat a thousand cold DMs
Cold outreach produced almost no sales for his app. Deep individual connections produced all of them. His conclusion: define what you're actually solving for before you judge whether your approach is working.

MAIN TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

Hardship is coming whether you choose it or not. The only real variable is how fast you close the gap between "this is happening to me" and "here's what I'm doing about it," and who you decide to become in the process. Chosen hardship is the training ground for the unchosen kind. If you never pick a mountain, one gets assigned to you, and you'll face it as whoever you happened to be that day.
