Then your onboarding is akin to a first date.
Hear me out...
You meet a beautiful stranger out at the grocery store (in-person, gasp!) and you strike up a conversation. You get their number and convince them to meet you for dinner. This is lead generation.
That first date is the interest call. It's where you get to know each other, discuss goals and aspirations and whether you align in your interests. All goes well, you get the second date, or in this case, the coaching sale.
Awesome, you're in business and dating.
What happens next?
The beginning of the dating process and onboarding that person into your life
For most coaches... nothing. They send a program, maybe a loom or a summary email and things are pretty underwhelming. No real relationship gets built and things fizzle and end.
There is another scenario here where nothing special happens, the relationship runs its course and you part ways amicably. Not everything is meant to last forever you know.
The other scenario is you love bomb your new client and overwhelm them right off the bat. The coaching equivalent here is that you throw everything you can at the client in an attempt to show the most "value" possible. This never ends well makes things way too complicated way too fast and the relationship burns out the other party.
Onboarding done right meets the person where they are and gradually layers the resources, information and complexity gradually over time. You don't ask your new partner to move in with you after a week, so why as a coach would you give them the keys to the kingdom on day one?
You need to meet your client where they are and give them what they need to stack little wins early in the same way that you need to slowly get to know a new partner and slowly integrate them into your life and learn more about theirs.
I'm going to be putting on a webinar specifically to discuss onboarding new clients and establishing a roadmap for success. Stay tuned for more information on that, but in the meantime, I'd love to hear what your main barriers with onboarding are.
